About me

I joined UWE in August 2023 as a Senior Lecturer, predominently on year two of the PCDA Policing programme. I am the Module Leader for 'Investigating Vulnerability and Risk', however I teach across the wide range of policing programmes offered at the university. My qualifications include two Master of Science Degrees with Distinction in Psychology and Criminology and Criminal Justice (2004), as well as Post Graduate Certificates in Higher Education and Secondary Education (2007). I am accredited by AIM to supervise and complete AIM 3 and Under 12 Assessments and interventions for children displaying harmful sexual behaviour (HSB). I also hold a ONLR Level 4 qualification (distinction) for Service Managers of Domestic Abuse Services with Safe Lives. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a registered member of the British Psychological Society and the British Society of Criminology

I have an extensive background of working within criminal justice, including prisoner rehabilitation at HMP Bristol and Leyhill, and well as experience working as Police Staff in the Bristol Community Safety Team coordinating crime reduction initiatives, such as the city-wide launch of Smart Water and provision of best practice guidance on Alley Gating.

Prior to UWE, I was a Manager for North Somerset Youth Offending and Prevention Service. This role carried a wide portfolio of responsibilities. In addition to general youth justice and YOT supervision, I was the HSB Lead for North Somerset Childrens' Services and had oversight of Referral Order Panels, including recruitment and training of panel members and coordination of the panels themselves. I also managed two multi-disciplinary teams that support vulnerable young people: the Youth Inclusion Support Programme (YISP) and the Avon and Somerset Young Victims Service (YVS), funded by and reporting to the OPCC and Framework of Integrated Care VANGUARD. YISP works with children and young people vulnerable to exploitation or at risk of offending or escalation within the criminal justice system. YVS works with children and young people who have been a victim of crime, anti-social behaviour and or may have been affected by domestic abuse.

I have over 12 years of teaching experience as Psychology teacher, Post 16 Head of Year and as a private tutor. I have examined for AQA and OCR A Level and GCSE Psychology. I have also been privileged to teach at a primary school in Zimbabwe.

Area of expertise

My areas of specialism and interest include trauma informed ways of working and vulnerability and risk. This includes child exploitation and contextual safeguarding, violence against women and girls (VAWG) and domestic abuse, psychological impact of trauma, harmful sexual behaviour, peer abuse and youth justice.
