About me
About me: I am a Senior Lecturer in Drama, Acting and Performance, with over 20 years' experience in developing and delivering industry-relevant practical workshops in theatre-making.
I have a special interest in devised theatre pedagogy, particularly involving storytelling with the body, gesture and presence; as well as experimental film-making/video art/performance projection.
I am a practicing theatre-maker, whose focus on applied theatre, devised theatre practices, screen-based performance practice and site-specific performance has led to various collaborative and interdisciplinary research projects, with numerous arts and community partners across the UK.
Applied Theatre practice: My research practice has evolved from years of freelance theatre-making practice (e.g. M31 Dance Theatre Company; Community at Heart; Acta Community Theatre; Touchdown Dance; OUCH Productions etc.).
Screen work: Prior to UWE, my short films had been shown at various venues and performance festivals: BBC Short Film Festival (London), Picture This (Bristol), Inbetween Time Festival (Bristol), Arnolfini (Bristol), New Directions (Notts), Fragments (Leics); New Works Festival (Leics), The Place Dance for Camera Showcase (London), Yorkshire Dance Festival, amongst others: https://vimeo.com/sarahberridge
Developing Drama Pedagogy: Since joining UWE in 2015, I have been involved in developing modules on the Drama, Acting and Performance Degree programme, as well as other student enrichment and industry engagement initiatives;
e.g. 'Drama Futures' - a week-long 'Festival of Industry' with guest speakers/meet the industry workshops) 2020-2023
‘Wellbeing in the Curriculum’ research project - trialling wellbeing initiatives through the undergraduate drama curriculum 2020-2022.
More recently, I am engaged in the development of a UWE Climate Theatre Action Group as part of the global initiative: Climate Theatre Action.
Current Research Project: I am co-investigator on an international research project (funded by the UKRI ESRC) using applied theatre methods for exploring water security and community responses to climate change; with Lindsey McEwen (Centre for Water, Communities and Resilience) and acta Community Theatre; See UWE RBI blog.
Other professional positions:
Guest Curator: I have been Guest Curator at the Exeter Dance International Film Festival since 2021: https://ediff.co.uk/
Academic Link Tutor: I have been advising on curriculum development and academic regulations at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School 2021-2025.
